AAC Chieftain Chioma Ifemeludike Withdraws From 2027 Anambra Senate Race

Former African Action Congress (AAC) senatorial candidate for Anambra Central, Chioma Ifemeludike, has withdrawn from the 2027 senatorial election, citing her personal convictions and recent developments she said influenced her decision.

Ifemeludike, who also serves as the AAC Deputy National Chairperson for the South-East, announced her withdrawal in a letter addressed to the party's Acting National Chairperson. The letter was made available to journalists on Friday.

She had emerged as the party's candidate through a consensus arrangement during the AAC primary election held in May.

In the letter, Ifemeludike formally informed the party's National Working Committee that she no longer wished to contest for the Anambra Central Senatorial District seat in the 2027 general election.

She also requested that her name be removed from every party record, process, and activity relating to the senatorial ticket.

According to her, the decision followed careful reflection and was guided by her commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of vulnerable members of society.

"I hereby formally notify the National Working Committee and the leadership of the African Action Congress of my decision to withdraw my interest and aspiration to contest for the office of Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District under the platform of our great party in the 2027 General Elections.

"This decision has been taken after careful reflection and in accordance with my personal convictions, principles, and commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of vulnerable members of society," she wrote.

Ifemeludike said recent events further strengthened her resolve to withdraw from the race.

She specifically referred to the role played by Doris Ogala Umezurike in matters surrounding the case involving Baby Testimony and the child's physically challenged mother, stating that the situation raised concerns about justice and accountability.

According to Ifemeludike, the handling of the matter prolonged the suffering of the child's mother, subjected her to public embarrassment, and raised questions about whether justice was being adequately served for the child.

She explained that those concerns ultimately influenced her decision to abandon her political ambition and instead devote her efforts to advocating for justice, accountability, and the protection of vulnerable persons.

The AAC chieftain reiterated her request that the party completely remove her name from all records, processes, and considerations relating to the Anambra Central senatorial candidacy.

Her withdrawal comes as political parties continue early preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
