The Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has arrested a police officer captured in a viral video threatening to shoot individuals who attempted to record him while carrying out official duties.

The officer, identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police Newton Isokpehi, drew widespread criticism after a video circulated on social media showing him issuing threats against bystanders and anyone filming police activities.

In the video, which was widely shared across social media platforms, the officer warned that he would “clear everybody down” if anyone tried to record him during operations. He also made remarks suggesting that senior officers who permitted such recordings would be responsible for the consequences.

The footage quickly gained attention online before it was eventually removed from his TikTok account.

Following the backlash, the officer released a separate video apologising for his comments, claiming his statements were made out of frustration.

Reacting to the incident, the Anambra State Police Command confirmed that the officer had been taken into custody and subjected to internal disciplinary procedures.

In a statement issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, Ngozi Ezeabata, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, the command said immediate action was taken after the video came to its attention.

According to the statement, a prompt review of the footage led to the identification and arrest of the officer, who is currently serving within the command.

The police authorities added that disciplinary measures were initiated in line with the ethical standards and professional guidelines of the Nigeria Police Force.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the officer was also subjected to a drug test to help determine all circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure a transparent review process.

Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu strongly condemned the officer’s conduct, describing the behaviour as unacceptable and inconsistent with the values of the Nigeria Police Force.

The commissioner reiterated that the force remains committed to professionalism and would not tolerate misconduct, abuse of authority, incitement, or actions capable of eroding public confidence in law enforcement institutions.

The command assured residents of Anambra State and the wider public that the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings would be made public, adding that any officer found guilty would face sanctions in accordance with police regulations and existing laws.

Police authorities also reminded officers and personnel across the command to maintain professionalism, emotional discipline, and respect while carrying out their responsibilities, especially at a time of heightened public scrutiny of security agencies.

In addition, the command commended members of the public, civil society organisations, and social media users for bringing attention to the incident, noting that public engagement plays an important role in strengthening accountability and improving policing standards.

Residents were encouraged to continue reporting incidents or behaviour capable of threatening public safety, peace, and trust in security institutions.
