Defence Minister Explains Why Fighting Banditry Remains Difficult

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has said that the success of Nigeria's fight against banditry and terrorism largely depends on the level of cooperation security agencies receive from local communities.

Speaking during Arise Television's Town Hall programme on the issue of state policing, the Defence Minister explained that military operations become significantly more difficult when residents fail to support security efforts or provide useful information.

According to Musa, communities play a critical role in determining the outcome of security operations. He noted that where residents align with or protect criminal elements, it becomes much harder for the Armed Forces to dismantle terrorist and bandit networks.

On the other hand, he said communities that actively collaborate with security personnel create an environment where military operations can achieve greater success.

The Defence Minister emphasised that Nigeria's democratic system requires trust and cooperation between the government and the people. He said authorities must continually engage with citizens to strengthen public confidence and encourage residents to participate in efforts to improve security.

Musa stressed that addressing insecurity is a shared responsibility that extends beyond the Armed Forces. He explained that while the government has a duty to provide security, citizens also have an important role to play by supporting lawful authorities and contributing to intelligence gathering within their communities.

He further called for stronger involvement of local government councils, traditional rulers and religious leaders in efforts to combat insecurity across the country.

According to the Defence Minister, empowering these community-based institutions will help improve communication between residents and security agencies, strengthen local intelligence and promote collective responsibility in protecting lives and property.

Musa concluded that a coordinated approach involving the Armed Forces, government institutions and local communities remains essential to achieving lasting peace and overcoming the country's security challenges.
