Mr Real, DJ Switch Criticise Remi Tinubu Over Small Business Advice

Nigerian singer Mr Real has stirred controversy after reacting to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu's suggestion that Nigerians explore small-scale businesses such as selling akara, roasted corn and kuli-kuli as a means of earning a living.

The First Lady made the remarks while speaking about the activities of the Renewed Hope Initiative, explaining that the programme provides grants—not loans—to vulnerable Nigerians to help them establish small businesses.

According to her, ventures such as roasting corn, selling akara or producing kuli-kuli require little capital and can serve as a starting point for individuals seeking financial independence.

She said the initiative had continued to support Nigerians through grants, adding that the government was doing what it could to encourage entrepreneurship and improve livelihoods.

However, Mr Real strongly disagreed with the recommendation.

In a series of posts shared on his Instagram page, the singer expressed frustration over the country's economic situation and declared that he would rather become a bandit than engage in petty trading.

He further claimed that if he ever took such a path, his targets would be politicians, adding that the risks would be worthwhile.

His remarks quickly generated widespread reactions across social media, with many users condemning the statement while others described it as an expression of frustration rather than a literal threat.

DJ Switch Also Reacts

Popular disc jockey and activist DJ Switch also criticised the First Lady's comments.

Reacting via her Instagram page, DJ Switch argued that while many countries are investing in innovation, infrastructure and skills development to prepare citizens for the future, Nigerian leaders were encouraging people to survive through small-scale trading.

She expressed disappointment with the advice, saying the country's leadership should focus on creating opportunities that empower citizens in a rapidly evolving global economy rather than promoting businesses such as selling kuli-kuli.

The First Lady's remarks have continued to generate mixed reactions online. While some Nigerians believe encouraging entrepreneurship and providing grants can help reduce unemployment, others argue that government policies should prioritise job creation, industrial growth and improved economic opportunities.
