Oyo Government Denies Paying Ransom for Abducted Pupils, Teachers
The Oyo State Government has dismissed reports alleging that it paid ransom to secure the release of pupils and teachers abducted by gunmen in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
The government described the reports as false and misleading, warning that such claims could misinform the public and undermine ongoing efforts to rescue the victims.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, blamed what he described as irresponsible online reports for spreading the allegation.
According to Oyelade, neither the Oyo State Government nor the Federal Government has paid any ransom to the kidnappers, either directly or through intermediaries.
He explained that both levels of government have continued to work closely with security agencies to secure the safe release of the abducted pupils and their teachers through lawful means.
The commissioner urged residents to ignore unverified reports and rely only on official information released by the state government and relevant authorities.
He reiterated the government's commitment to ending the incident and ensuring that the victims return home safely.
The denial follows widespread reports suggesting that ransom had been paid to the abductors.
The victims were kidnapped on May 15 when armed bandits launched coordinated attacks on three schools in the Yawota and Ahoro-Esienle communities of Oriire Local Government Area.
The assault claimed the life of a teacher, while several pupils and other teachers were taken away by the attackers.
The abducted victims remain in captivity as security agencies, with the support of the Oyo State and Federal Governments, continue rescue operations aimed at securing their safe release and bringing those responsible to justice.
