Kebbi Police Probe Reports of Sai Malam Group's Resurgence in Argungu
The Kebbi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into reports alleging that the Sai Malam group has resurfaced in Argungu Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, the command said it had received intelligence regarding the alleged activities of the group and had already begun gathering and analysing information to determine the true situation.
According to the police, investigations are ongoing, and authorities are working to verify the claims before reaching any conclusions.
The command also clarified that the Sai Malam group has not been officially designated as a terrorist organisation under any existing proscription order in Nigeria.
The statement disclosed that some individuals allegedly linked to the group were arrested and prosecuted by police operatives in Zuru in February 2026 over suspected criminal activities.
During the operation, investigators reportedly recovered items believed to be counterfeit currencies from several countries, including the Nigerian naira, the United States dollar, the CFA franc, and the Libyan dinar.
Police also said officers recovered materials suspected to be associated with ritual or occult practices, along with other items considered relevant to the ongoing investigation.
However, the command noted that no firearms were recovered from the suspects during the operation or subsequent investigations.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the Kebbi State Police Command assured residents that it would continue to protect lives and property while taking decisive action against criminal activities within the framework of the law.
The police further stated that anyone found culpable following the ongoing investigation would be made to face the appropriate legal process.
The command also appealed to members of the public to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic, and continue to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing investigations.
Residents were encouraged to rely on official statements from the police and other relevant authorities for accurate updates on the security situation in the state.
