Youths Demand Sowore's Release as Court Grants ₦200 Million Bail

A group of Nigerian youths gathered at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday to demand the immediate release of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.

The protesters assembled outside the court ahead of the hearing on Sowore's application seeking the restoration of his bail and the reversal of a bench warrant previously issued against him.

Chanting solidarity songs, the demonstrators called for Sowore's freedom while urging authorities to uphold justice and work towards building a better Nigeria.

They were heard singing, "Free Sowore now. We want a better Nigeria," while also appealing to security personnel at the court to support efforts aimed at creating a brighter future for the country's younger generation.

The case had earlier been adjourned by Justice Mohammed Umar, who fixed June 30, 2026, for ruling after both parties adopted their legal processes. Sowore had previously been remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.

Following Tuesday's proceedings, the Federal High Court granted Sowore bail in the sum of ₦200 million.

Justice Mohammed Umar ruled that the activist must provide two sureties in the same amount as part of the bail conditions.

According to the court, one of the sureties must be a traditional ruler from Sowore's community, while the second must own landed property within Abuja.

The court also directed Sowore to surrender his international travel documents to the Deputy Registrar pending the determination of the case.

The ruling brings temporary relief to Sowore and his supporters, who had continued to campaign for his release while awaiting the court's decision.
