Tinubu Explains Why FG Approved Major NYSC Reforms

President Bola Tinubu has said the Federal Government's approval of sweeping reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is aimed at equipping young Nigerians with practical skills and preparing them to play a greater role in the country's development.

The President made the remarks in a post on his verified X account on Wednesday, two days after the Federal Executive Council approved the reforms during its meeting on Monday.

Tinubu described the initiative as the most far-reaching overhaul of the NYSC scheme since its establishment in 1973.

According to him, the reforms form part of his administration's broader commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for Nigerian youths and empowering them for the future.

The President recalled that during his inauguration, he pledged to prioritise young people and women through policies designed to expand opportunities and promote inclusive development.

He said the newly approved reforms represent one of the steps being taken to fulfil that promise.

Tinubu acknowledged the important role the NYSC has played over the past five decades in promoting national unity and fostering integration among young Nigerians from different parts of the country.

However, he noted that changing economic realities require the scheme to evolve beyond its traditional objectives.

According to the President, while the NYSC's nation-building mission remains vital, today's Nigeria demands a programme that also prepares graduates with practical skills capable of improving productivity, entrepreneurship and employment opportunities.

He explained that the reforms are intended to reposition the scheme so it can better meet the needs of corps members while contributing more effectively to national growth and development.

The Federal Government believes the changes will strengthen the NYSC by placing greater emphasis on skills acquisition, innovation and economic empowerment, ensuring that participants are better prepared for life after national service.
