U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria to Close for Memorial Day Observance

The United States Mission Nigeria has announced the temporary closure of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos in observance of Memorial Day in the United States.

The announcement was made through an official statement shared on the mission’s X account.

According to the notice, both diplomatic offices will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, as part of the annual Memorial Day observance, a U.S. federal holiday marked on the last Monday of May each year.

The mission explained that the day is dedicated to honouring American military personnel who lost their lives while serving their country.

Memorial Day is widely regarded in the United States as a solemn occasion for remembrance, with many citizens visiting cemeteries and memorial sites to pay tribute to fallen service members.

As part of longstanding traditions associated with the observance, volunteers often place American flags on the graves of military personnel buried in national cemeteries across the country.
