APC Chieftain Dismisses Peter Obi's 2027 Election Allegations

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-East, Dr. George Agbakahi, has dismissed claims by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi that there are efforts to prevent him from participating in the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Agbakahi described the allegations as unfounded and politically motivated, insisting that such serious claims should be backed by credible and verifiable evidence.

According to him, there is no publicly available proof linking the Federal Government or the Presidency to any attempt to stop any qualified opposition politician from contesting the next presidential election.

Agbakahi also addressed concerns surrounding the registration status of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), noting that the matter is already before the courts and stems from legal disputes involving political parties rather than actions initiated by the Federal Government.

He stressed that Nigeria's Constitution guarantees the independence of the judiciary, providing all aggrieved parties with lawful avenues to seek redress.

The APC chieftain further stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) remains the constitutionally recognised body responsible for regulating political parties and conducting elections without external interference.

He argued that political parties are expected to comply with constitutional and statutory requirements, adding that regulatory or legal scrutiny should not automatically be interpreted as political persecution.

Agbakahi maintained that anyone aspiring to occupy the nation's highest office must demonstrate sound leadership, strategic planning and the organisational capacity required to build and manage a viable political platform.

'Elections Are Won Through Organisation'

Commenting further, Agbakahi alleged that Peter Obi's remarks were an attempt to portray routine legal and regulatory issues as a coordinated campaign against his political ambitions.

He argued that elections in Nigeria are decided through effective mobilisation, voter engagement, coalition-building and sound political organisation rather than claims of conspiracy.

The APC chieftain also described President Bola Tinubu as an experienced politician who built a nationwide political structure over many years through alliances, party development and electoral victories.

He urged politicians to channel their energy into strengthening their parties, resolving internal disputes through the courts where necessary, and presenting policies capable of winning public support.

Agbakahi concluded by stating that the 2027 presidential election remains open to every qualified Nigerian who satisfies the constitutional and legal requirements for contesting the office.
