Thomas Tuchel Defends Tactical Decisions After England's World Cup Exit.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has defended his tactical approach following the Three Lions' dramatic 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting he has no regrets despite criticism over his substitutions.

England looked on course to reach their first World Cup final since 1966 after Anthony Gordon gave his side the lead early in the second half at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

However, the defending champions mounted a strong comeback, with Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez scoring late goals to secure Argentina's place in the final.

Reflecting on the result, Tuchel admitted England struggled to maintain control after taking the lead.

The German coach said his players became too passive after opening the scoring, allowing Argentina to dominate possession and create numerous chances from crosses and sustained attacking pressure.

According to him, England found it difficult to regain possession and failed to maintain the level of performance that had put them in front.

The defeat has sparked debate over Tuchel's tactical decisions, particularly his choice to replace goalscorer Anthony Gordon with defender Ezri Konsa in the 72nd minute as Argentina intensified their attacks.

Responding to the criticism, Tuchel explained that the changes were intended to strengthen England defensively after his side began leaving too much space at the back.

He noted that England had already started conceding dangerous opportunities immediately after taking the lead, prompting his decision to switch to a five-man defence in an effort to reduce the growing pressure.

The England manager maintained that his substitutions were made with the best interests of the team in mind and rejected suggestions that they were responsible for the defeat.

He also dismissed claims that England became overly defensive after going ahead, arguing that his team simply struggled to retain possession and build attacks.

According to Tuchel, the inability to keep the ball prevented England from pushing forward in search of a second goal, making defensive adjustments the more practical option.

Despite the disappointment of the semi-final exit, Tuchel made it clear that he has no intention of stepping down from his role.

The former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager recently signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him in charge of England until the 2028 UEFA European Championship, which the country will co-host.

Tuchel said his focus remains firmly on the future, expressing his determination to continue building the national team despite the painful defeat.

England will now shift their attention to upcoming international competitions, while Argentina prepare to compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final as they continue their bid to retain the title.
