Eustáquio's Late Winner Sends Canada Into World Cup Round of 16

Canada secured a dramatic place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Stephen Eustáquio scored a stoppage-time winner to seal a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa in Los Angeles.

Head coach Jesse Marsch later introduced Alphonso Davies for his first appearance of the tournament, and the Bayern Munich star nearly made an instant impact. His perfectly timed pass found Promise David, whose shot narrowly missed the target.

South Africa had one final opportunity when Oswin Appollis unleashed a powerful effort, but Crépeau produced another important save to preserve the deadlock.

Just as the match appeared destined for extra time, Canada finally found the decisive breakthrough.

A loose ball fell kindly to Stephen Eustáquio on the edge of the penalty area, and the midfielder struck a superb low finish into the bottom corner to score Canada's first-ever goal in a FIFA World Cup knockout match.

The dramatic late winner secured a memorable victory for the tournament co-hosts, ending South Africa's impressive campaign and booking Canada's place in the Round of 16, where they will face either the Netherlands or Morocco.
