The Ghanaian government has formally protested Canada's decision to deny a visa to Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey ahead of the country's opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision means Partey will be unavailable for Ghana's Group L clash against Panama, scheduled to take place at BMO Field in Toronto on Wednesday.

Ghana's Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed that the government had submitted an official diplomatic protest to Canadian authorities, expressing concerns over the refusal to grant the midfielder entry into the country.

According to Ablakwa, Ghana views the decision as unfair, particularly because the player has not been convicted of any offence and remains eligible to represent his country at the international level.

The minister stated that the government's diplomatic note requested a review of the decision and urged Canadian authorities to reconsider their position.

Partey, who currently plays for Villarreal CF after previously starring for Arsenal F.C., is facing multiple criminal charges in the United Kingdom, including allegations of rape and sexual assault involving four women between 2020 and 2022.

The 32-year-old has pleaded not guilty to all charges, and his trial is scheduled for next year.

Ghanaian officials argue that denying the midfielder entry based on allegations that have not yet been tested in court raises important questions about fairness and due process.

While acknowledging Canada's sovereign right to enforce its immigration laws, the Ghanaian government maintained that the decision appears disproportionate given the absence of a judicial determination.

The visa setback represents a significant blow for the Black Stars, who will begin their World Cup campaign without one of their most experienced players.

Partey has been a key figure in Ghana's midfield for several years and was expected to play a central role in the team's quest to advance beyond the group stage.

FIFA has confirmed that the midfielder will not be able to travel to Canada in time for the Panama fixture.

However, he is expected to remain eligible for Ghana's subsequent Group L matches against England and Croatia, both of which are scheduled to be played in the United States, where no travel restrictions currently affect his participation.
